Intercessory Prayer Ministry

The Intercessory Prayer Ministry of St. Andrew's Church was inaugurated on Sunday, 17th July 2000 , as the first new project of the Millennium. A prayer room above the choir was dedicated for prayer by the then Minister, Rev. T. Devaputhiran. The requests that came in from our own congregation, as well as from people who heard about this ministry were collected and conveyed to our Prayer Volunteers, who came to the church to pray.

In June 2002, the ministry was expanded to allow sending prayer lists by email and post to the volunteers. This enabled volunteers who are living away from Chennai to be involved in the ministry and also for many more to join. Urgent requests were sent by email, so they could be attended to without loss of time. Most of the volunteers now choose to pray at home. We now have 69 Prayer Volunteers participating in this ministry. Weekly updates are provided to the volunteers as new requests come in every week. All requests are prayed over for a period of one month. Answered prayers are conveyed to the volunteers as and when they are received.

Apart from individual prayers, we pray for our church, our city and our country. By organizing periodic prayer events in the church, where anyone may participate, we also try and encourage our congregation members to pray beyond their own personal needs and those of their immediate families. The Day of Prayer for Revival in India in the second week of July and the Fasting and Prayer Day on Good Friday have become annual events that many in our congregation attend with enthusiasm. It is wonderful to see people of all ages participating, including children. We are seeing an increase in the desire among our congregation for both private and corporate prayer and we give glory to God for this.

God has blessed this ministry by answering many prayers. This ministry has also been a blessing to the members within it, who give of their time and energies to intercede for others.

  • One of our prayer volunteers said, “IPM has helped me to pray with focus for the needs of the church, which I had never done till I became a part of this ministry. I am thrilled when I read the praise points and strengthened in my faith. Being part of the IPM has also helped me in having a disciplined prayer life. Personally, I have experienced answers to prayer as I shared them with the group.”

  • Another member of our team said, “This ministry has been a great blessing for me in strengthening my personal relationship with God. I find that the more I pray for others, the more my desire to pray for others increases. I feel my love and compassion for others is deepening day by day.”
